"I believe that in a great city, or even in a small city or a village, a great theater is the outward and visible sign of an inward and probable culture."

~ Sir Laurence Olivier

Our Mission: To provide an outreach of fellowship and cultural enrichment by facilitating a quality theater/arts oriented experience within the greater Sterling community, centered on family and community values.

History of SCT

One day in the spring of 1996, Susan Galvin looked at the unused stage in the Parish Hall of The First Church in Sterling and asked, "What do you think about starting a community theatre here?" By that fall, she and a group of The First Church members produced Sterling Community Theatre’s first show, Godspell.

After a surprising success, the group decided to continue the following year with Jesus Christ Superstar. Since then the group has produced at least one show a year, every year. Subsequent shows have included Oliver, Into the Woods, Annie, Fiddler on the Roof, Steel Magnolias, Camelot, The Wizard of Oz, and The Music Man.

Sterling Community Theatre has always been an extension and community outreach of The First Church. Membership and involvement is open to any resident of any town, not just Sterling.

Involvement in Sterling Community Theatre is open to anyone interested in participating. You don’t even need to be a resident of Sterling. While our on stage roles may be limited by the requirements of a particular show, there are always plenty of ways to play a part in the success of the production. Please let us know if you have an interest in helping!

Volunteer Opportunities

Costumes Costuming at SCT is often a combination of rental and custom made pieces. A quick stitch or dab of hot glue transforms everyday people in to bigger-than-life heroes and villains!

Props Whether a gold painted pocket watch, medieval sword or fifty-foot hot air balloon, the magic imagery of props help complete any show. If you have a knack for creating clever effects out of simple materials…we have a hot glue gun for you!

Fundraising
More goes into a community theatre event than acting, singing and dancing. To ensure SCT continues to provide a valuable learning and cultural outlet, we are constantly seeking opportunities and ideas to financially support our efforts.

Set Building Set pieces enhance the performance of the individuals on stage, but at SCT they must also be functional in a small space and portable. Some of our most creative work occurs at set building on Saturday mornings.

Painting
A door is a just a door until a few strokes of a paintbrush transforms it into the elegant entrance of a mansion! Set painting is often the final touch that creates an experience the audience will truly appreciate.

Concessions
Now really...what is going to the theatre without snacks? During pre-show and intermission, audience members enjoy baked goods, snacks and drinks thanks to our volunteer bakers and operators of the concession stand.

Tickets The object of having a show is, of course, having people come see it! And they need a ticket to get in. SCT ticket volunteers staff the ticket desk and entrances, greeting the most important people in the show…the audience.

Setup
Since SCT shares its venue with other organizations, we often need to setup and "breakdown" the hall for each performance. House volunteers arrange chairs, stage extensions and other aspects in front of the curtain.

Parental Monitors SCT encourages the young to get involved and learn from the theatre experience. Parental Monitors ensure everyone has an enjoyable and safe time.

Stage Crew They dress in black clothes, lurk in the dark and are the unsung heroes who, deal with eccentric personalities on stage and, no matter what, ensure that the show must go on!
